The Old Galway Society was founded in 1961.  Its first President was Canon George Quinn.

The patron of our Society for many years up to his death on 21st October 2014 was Mr. Donal Taheney, who was also a founder member.  Though he lived a long and fulfilled life, we were nevertheless deeply saddened by his passing. Donal gave great service to the Society, being our guide at the Annual Outings and giving many memorable talks through the years as is reflected in our 'Talks Page' We will miss him .  Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

In 2015, the Society is now honoured and delighted to state that Doctor Jim Higgins, Galway City Heritage Officer has become the new Patron on the Society

The Society is dedicated to preserving Galway 's historical and medieval fabric and heritage and to promoting a love of the ancient city.  It attempts to achieve this by respecting, retaining and recalling the comprehensive history of Galway.

The Society organises a series of monthly 'Talks' from September through to April each year, these Talks are open to the general public, and you are all most welcome. In addition, it arranges an annual field trip each summer, for members and associates.  The Society is also available to conduct walking tours of Galway City during the summer months.

This website will provide an opportunity for members and non-members alike to keep abreast of developments within the Society.

New members are always welcome. For information about joining, click on Membership.
